Data Point: Voting Percentage and Different Factors

Context

More than 76 percent of the voters arrived in the recent assembly elections in Chhattisgarh. Chhattisgarh is a state with literacy and Human Development Index (HDI) less than the entire country. Although Chhattisgarh is one of the few states like Assam, West Bengal, Tripura and Meghalaya, even though the Human Development Index (HDI) was low, the voting was higher than the national average.
  • Generally, the percentage of voting percentage in Indian states with better human development index is high.
  • Considering the life expectancy, education and per capita income, the human development index is determined. Especially education or literacy is substantially related to state-wise voting percentage.

Voting percentage Vs. Human Development Index

  • The results obtained from the above graph, drawn between the voting percentage of the recent assembly elections and the human development index,
  • Generally, the voting percentage is even higher when there is a greater human development index of a state.
  • But even though the human development index of states like Chhattisgarh, Assam, West Bengal, Tripura and Meghalaya is lower than the national average, the percentage of voting percentage is even higher than the national average.

Voting percentage Vs. Literacy rate

  • The results obtained from the above graph, drawn between the voting percentage of the recent assembly elections and the literacy rate,
  • Generally, the percentage of voting percentage increases as the literacy rate of any state increases.
  • But despite the literacy rate of Meghalaya, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan states being below the national average, the percentage of voting percentage is more than the national average.

Conclusion

The data displayed in the data analysis dismiss the concept that with the increase in the human development index and literacy rate, voting percentage also increases in a state. There are also many other social, political and local factors of increasing the voting percentage in any state or in any particular region, such as polarization, public confidence in the election process, strategy adopted by political parties etc.
