Ortolan Bunting in India

  • Recently, photos of very rare octoles bunting bird took place in Mangalore. It is said that it is probably the first photograph of Ortolan bounty in India to record.\
  • Ortolan or Ortolan borting is a small song song (finch-like songbirds) related to the bunting family.
  • This bird is found from Mongolia to Europe and travels to Africa through the Middle East.
  • Ortolan bunting usually travels through the Middle East, but it can stop anywhere when the road is lost during migration.
  • IUCN has classified Ortolan banting as 'Least Concern' in its red list of threatened species.
  • However, it is considered a vulnerable species because the bird has become the focal point of a very popular dish in French cuisine.
