United Nations General Assembly approved the proposal against sexual harassment for the first time

Why in the discussion?

The Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly has approved a proposal against sexual harassment, which is the first of its kind in this global organization. It is proposed to have an ideal structure against sexual harassment , in which member countries have been urged to condemn violence against women and girls including sexual harassment and to adopt a policy of eliminating such violence.

What's in this proposal?

  • In this proposal it has been said that not all countries should bring any tradition, tradition or religious views into account to avoid their obligations regarding the elimination of violence against women and girls . This proposal is not binding, therefore it has appealed to all the member countries to stop sexual harassment against women and girls, to eliminate it and to protect the victims from all kinds of violence.
  • The proposal has been asked by all the nations to ensure that employers in all areas fail to comply with the laws in cases of sexual harassment, take necessary steps for their accountability. Apart from this, it has been said to encourage digital technology companies, including Internet Service Providers and Digital Platforms, to adopt positive measures with the approach of ending sexual harassment. This proposal has also been urged to ensure the safety of all women and their sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights.

India had opposed the death penalty proposal

  • Let us tell you that sometime India had voted against the draft resolution brought on behalf of United Nations General Assembly on the death penalty. This proposal was presented by this third committee of the General Assembly. In favor of this draft proposal, 123 were opposed and 46 were opposed . 30 member countries did not participate in this poll.

What is the Third Committee of the General Assembly?

The United Nations General Assembly is called the Third Committee, such as social, human, and cultural affairs, which can affect the people from all over the world, which allot the committee. An important part of the work of this third committee is to focus on Human Rights Council's reports on issues related to human rights. The committee also monitors matters related to women's progress, child protection, domestic affairs and refugee behavior. Apart from these, the discussion is also discussed in the Committee on promoting fundamental freedoms by ending racism and racial discrimination and promoting the right to self-sufficiency. At the same time, this third committee also looks at issues of important social development like youth, family, rising age, divination, crime prevention, criminal justice and drug control.
